Holographic Mist Gateway

The Portal: A Doorway Made of Light and Mist

The Portal

A silhouetted figure in a full skirt stands inside the wooden portal frame, swirling magenta light forming a vortex pattern around them.
A vortex of magenta light swirls through the doorway

A doorway made of light and mist. An 8-foot threshold turns a controlled mist plane into a shifting gateway: the image holds the doorway for a moment, and then you break the surface by walking through it.

Challenge

Hold a stable image on a surface people are meant to walk through. The mist plane has to reform quickly after every crossing, stay projectable in changing conditions, and read as a gateway rather than a screen.

Solution

An 8-foot structure creates and controls a mist plane positioned for projection. The media ranges from abstract motion to portal environments and artist-specific content, and the plane recovers on its own after every crossing, so the doorway is always waiting for the next person.

Outcome

The audience does not just look at the portal; they cross it. Independently listed by Geary Art Crawl as Portal To Another Dimension, an installation by Holographic Realms. Shown at festivals and art events across North America.

Contributions

  • Built the 8-foot threshold structure and its controlled mist plane
  • Positioned projection so the doorway reads as a gateway, not a screen
  • Designed media from abstract motion to artist-specific portal content
  • Kept the mist surface self-recovering through constant crossings
